The Bravades, the votive festival of Saint-Tropez, summarize a good part of the city's history. For three days, in a popular and good-natured atmosphere, vibrate to the rhythm of parades and gatherings. Here is an overview of this centuries-old tradition...

All the history of Saint-Tropez

Every year, on May 16, 17 and 18, the Tropezians celebrate their patron saint. Supplicated by Nero, the body of Tropez was placed on a boat on the Arno. The boat went down the river, crossed the Mediterranean and came to rest exactly where the city is today. In addition to celebrating the miracle, the Bravades also commemorate the commitment of the Tropezians to defend their city. As early as the 15th century, all the inhabitants had to take up arms to resist attacks by Barbary pirates. In 1558, it was decided to elect a Captain of the City who would lead these militias. Even today, every Easter Monday a Captain is elected to lead all the festivities of the Bravades.

The course of the festival

This story explains each stage of the Bravades: the parades in period military costume, the traditional dress of the inhabitants but also the masses in honor of Saint Tropez. Numerous blunderbusses punctuate these very festive or more meditative moments. Appointment thus as of 8 a.m., on the 16th, for the first aubades. Then follow the highlights of the Bravades: the meetings of the Bravade Corps, the taking of the Pique and the Flag, the small and large bravades and finally, the traditional picnic to close the festivities.  Of course, the team of the Bastide de Saint-Tropez will know how to make the most of these moments.

The Bravades reflect the deep attachment of the Tropezians to their history and traditions. The friendly atmosphere gives to the small city a magnificent animation not to be missed during your stay at the Bastide de Saint-Tropez.
